Pino Signoretto: The Maestro of Fire and Form

Few names in the world of glass command the same reverence as Pino Signoretto. (1944-2017).
A master of unmatched technical brilliance and artistic depth, Signoretto elevated the traditions of Murano glassmaking into a personal language of power, grace, and innovation. His work, spanning over five decades, embodies both the rigorous discipline of Venetian craftsmanship and the expressive freedom of contemporary sculpture.

A Life Shaped by Fire
Born in Favaro Veneto, Venice, Signoretto entered the world of glass at a young age. By 16, he was already working in the furnace, and just ten years later, he had earned the title of Maestro—a recognition reserved only for the most skilled glassmakers on Murano. From that moment on, Signoretto’s career would become a relentless pursuit of excellence and experimentation, combining the age-old techniques of glassblowing with a sculptor’s sensitivity to form, movement, and meaning.

Unrivaled Technical Mastery
Signoretto’s technical prowess was simply extraordinary. He could sculpt molten glass with astonishing speed and control, often by hand and without molds—producing monumental works, lifelike figures, and intricate details that left both peers and collectors in awe. He had a unique ability to transform glass from a delicate, volatile medium into something muscular, expressive, and full of life.
His command of solid glass sculpture, in particular, became legendary. Whether creating mythological creatures, classical figures, or modern abstractions, Signoretto imbued each piece with emotional intensity and structural complexity rarely seen in glass art.

A Global Legacy
While deeply rooted in Murano tradition, Pino Signoretto was a truly international artist. He collaborated with some of the greatest minds in contemporary art and design—Dale Chihuly, Kiki Smith, Richard Marquis, Jeff Koons, and Toots Zynsky, to name a few. His ability to translate an artist’s vision into glass was unmatched, and he was often sought after for technically demanding projects that only he could bring to life.
In addition to his studio practice, Signoretto was a dedicated teacher, committed to passing on his knowledge to future generations. He taught extensively in the U.S., Japan, and Europe, inspiring countless young glass artists to pursue the path of mastery.

Recognition and Honors
Throughout his lifetime, Pino Signoretto received numerous awards and honors, including being named Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana—one of Italy’s highest civilian honors. His works are held in important museums and private collections around the world, standing as permanent testaments to his genius.

More Than a Master – A Legend
To speak of Signoretto is to speak of Murano at its most powerful—where flame and vision unite, where tradition is not preserved but reinvented. His legacy is not just in the masterpieces he created, but in the standard he set for what is possible in glass.

Emanuel Toffolo – The Art of Flame-Worked Nature

From the heart of Murano, Emanuel Toffolo brings an extraordinary blend of tradition and innovation to the world of glass art. Renowned for his lifelike sculptures of insects and beetles, Toffolo has redefined what is possible with the flamework technique, turning flame and glass into delicate tributes to nature’s most intricate forms.

Each of Toffolo’s creations is a testament to his technical mastery and obsessive attention to detail. Ferro Glass Masterworks Join WMODA Collection

The Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts (WMODA) in Hollywood, Florida, has announced a significant new acquisition: several vases, bowls and glass sculptures by Pietro and Riccardo Ferro, two internationally celebrated Murano artists renowned for their mastery of glass carving.

This major addition is now on display on the main floor, where visitors can experience the depth, elegance, and expressive force of the Ferros’ artistry. The installation marks one of the largest museum holdings of the duo’s work in North America.

The Ferro brothers’ works – exquisitely carved, dynamic, and often monumental in form – represent a unique intersection of Murano’s centuries-old glass tradition and contemporary sculptural experimentation. Their use of the intaglio carving method transforms molten glass into tactile, light-infused compositions that shift between figuration and abstraction.

Now displayed in close proximity, the Ferros’ carved Murano forms enter into an exciting visual dialogue with both historic and contemporary masters—from Dale Chihuly’s monumental seaforms to the intricate works of Toots Zynsky and the Venetian virtuosity of Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra. They are joined by the botanical precision of Paul Stankard, the sculptural brilliance of Stephen Rolfe Powell, and a dynamic group of local artists, forming a vibrant gallery of international talent.

Photos from the unpacking and installation capture a special behind-the-scenes moment, with Louise Irvine, the WMODA curatorial team, and myself working closely to prepare the gallery space. This collaboration celebrates not only the exceptional artistry of the Ferros, but also WMODA’s continued commitment to showcasing the finest in decorative glass art from around the world.

This permanent display invites visitors to immerse themselves in the material brilliance and expressive power of Murano’s living tradition—now thriving at WMODA.

WMODA, founded by Arthur Wiener, is a world-class institution dedicated to 19th–21st century fired arts, with a focus on British ceramics and art glass.
Under the visionary leadership of director Louise Irvine, the museum has grown into a dynamic cultural destination where tradition and innovation in decorative arts are celebrated.

James Francis Gill – Staatsgalerie Stuttgart – This Is Tomorrow

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart has opened its ambitious new exhibition, “This Is Tomorrow,” a forward-looking exploration of contemporary issues through the lens of historic and modern art. Among the featured artists is James Francis Gill, a foundational figure in American Pop Art, whose work returns to the European spotlight with renewed relevance.

Now 90 years old, Gill traveled to Stuttgart on May 15, 2025, to attend the unveiling of his work in the museum’s collection galleries. The Staatsgalerie has recently acquired eleven works from the 1960s, showcasing Gill’s vibrant and politically charged imagery in dialogue with artists such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Andy Warhol, and Maria Lassnig.

The exhibition tackles urgent global themes—climate, war, freedom, and identity—while posing the question: “What will tomorrow bring?” Gill’s Pop-infused portraits and psychologically loaded compositions offer a striking counterpoint to this narrative, anchoring his legacy not just in art history but in the ongoing cultural conversation.

With “This Is Tomorrow,” the Staatsgalerie both honors Gill’s historical impact and affirms the continued resonance of his work in a rapidly changing world.
