James Francis Gill – Staatsgalerie Stuttgart – This Is Tomorrow

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart has opened its ambitious new exhibition, “This Is Tomorrow,” a forward-looking exploration of contemporary issues through the lens of historic and modern art. Among the featured artists is James Francis Gill, a foundational figure in American Pop Art, whose work returns to the European spotlight with renewed relevance.

Now 90 years old, Gill traveled to Stuttgart on May 15, 2025, to attend the unveiling of his work in the museum’s collection galleries. The Staatsgalerie has recently acquired eleven works from the 1960s, showcasing Gill’s vibrant and politically charged imagery in dialogue with artists such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Andy Warhol, and Maria Lassnig.

The exhibition tackles urgent global themes—climate, war, freedom, and identity—while posing the question: “What will tomorrow bring?” Gill’s Pop-infused portraits and psychologically loaded compositions offer a striking counterpoint to this narrative, anchoring his legacy not just in art history but in the ongoing cultural conversation.

With “This Is Tomorrow,” the Staatsgalerie both honors Gill’s historical impact and affirms the continued resonance of his work in a rapidly changing world.
